Service Academy eligibility requirements
Think you’re ready to apply to one of the U.S. military service academies? First, check these requirements to make sure you’re eligible. To apply, you must:
Be a U.S. citizen (some exceptions may apply).
Be of good moral character.
Be unmarried, with no dependents, and not pregnant.
Be at least 17 years old but less than 23 by July 1 of the year you enter.
Obtain solid grades in rigorous college-prep courses.
Earn strong standardized test scores (minimum SAT scores of 500 verbal and 500 math, or ACT scores of 21 English, 19 Social Studies, 24 Mathematics, and 24 Science).
Demonstrate leadership through work experience or extracurricular activities.
Pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment, which includes physical challenges.
Meet medical and weight standards (or receive a waiver).
Attend an interviewer during the selection process.

Service Academies application process
The service academy application process can be challenging. But with careful planning and preparation, you can navigate it successfully. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand what to expect and how to prepare.
1. Start Early
Begin planning as early as your sophomore year of high school (if you’re past that, you can of course still apply—planning ahead just makes this relatively easier). The admissions process at all of the service academies is intense and may require thoughtful selection of your classes and extracurricular activities. You’ll also need time to meet all the eligibility requirements (see above, plus on individual academy websites).
2. Build a Well-Rounded Profile
Service academies seek candidates who excel in three key areas: academics, leadership, and athletics. What does it mean to excel in each area?
Academics: Focus on achieving strong grades in math, science, and English courses. Also, challenge yourself with a rigorous course load, taking advanced courses (like AP classes) in your best subjects. You should also aim for high standardized test scores (SAT or ACT).
Leadership: Take on leadership roles in extracurricular activities, community service, or work experience. Demonstrating your ability to lead is crucial for gaining admission to any of the service academies.
Athletics: Participate in sports. Physical fitness is a significant part of military service academy life, and showing your commitment to athletics will strengthen your application.
3. Secure a Nomination

4. Submit Your Application
Once you have your nomination, it’s time to complete your application. Your application will include:
