Our Services
A lot goes into crafting compelling graduate school applications. We support students on the key components of the graduate school admissions process.
Statement of Purpose
••••••••••
Craft an impressive Statement of Purpose (SoP) to make a lasting impact on the admissions committee. We provide comprehensive support from start to finish, offering valuable tips and guidance to help you avoid common pitfalls. Our service includes 12 hours of coaching support, with a dedicated graduate essay specialist who understands your field. We help you narrate a compelling story that incorporates your skills, academic preparation, potential for original research, career goals, and fit for the specific programs you're targeting. Our goal is to make your pursuit of this particular degree at this school seem inevitable and aligned with your career aspirations.

Diversity Statements, Research Statements, Explanatory Addenda & Optional Essays
••••••••••
Many degrees require an additional essay or two (or three or four). Law schools offer the chance to submit an addendum as well as a diversity statement; education programs might ask for a pedagogical statement; doctoral programs often want a separate research proposal. Our services include a planning session, as well as guidance for outlining, drafting, and revising. We include two face-to-face meetings and two complete rounds of revision. Here are some of the most common additional essays we can help you with:
Research Statements provide an opportunity to highlight your research skills, experiences, achievements, and goals. Their purpose is to demonstrate to the admissions committee your ability to conduct independent research in your field, including proficiency in current search methods and technologies. Your statement should cover past research projects and outline your short and long-term research objectives. This genre is purely academic and serves as a platform to showcase any grants, funding, awards, or applications in progress.
Diversity Statements are optional essays for most law schools, as well as required essays for some other programs. They are not sob stories and they are not what you might think of as Affirmative Action. Rather, they are chances for the admissions committee to understand a different side of your story: perhaps the story of your resilience against odds, or the story of your contributions to the communities you inhabit. They offer you a chance to contextualize your actual, factual accomplishments in light of any obstacles you have overcome. They are a fantastic place to explain how your background has shaped your vision. The trickiest part? Avoiding repetition from your personal statement.
Policy Memos have become part of several degree programs. They are an academic exercise designed to prove to the committee that you are ready to take on graduate work. Princeton's School of Public and International Affairs, for instance, requires applicants to write a four-page essay that “Identifies a problem in domestic or international affairs.” You are then asked to “discuss its complexity, and propose policy recommendations. The memo should demonstrate the ability to provide critical analysis of an issue, to write cogently, and offer reasonable and realistic recommendations.”

Quantitative Resume or CV
Resume
••••••••••
If you are still in college or recently graduated, you might feel like you don’t have enough information. If you are returning to school after being in the workforce, you might be wondering which job duties you should highlight or how to narrow your experiences down to a page. Our resume service offers you several templates to choose from. We help you get your life onto the page in a way that is compact, powerful, and reader-friendly. This service is conducted through a shared Google Drive document that you and your coach develop, revise, and perfect. This includes up to 3 hours of comments, editing, and proofreading.

Quantitative Resume or CV
••••••••••
This service will take whatever you have already prepared, if anything, and help you craft your first quantitative resume or CV. We will teach you the difference between a normal resume and this genre and help you showcase your quantitative coursework, research, professional experience, and activities in a manner that foregrounds your qualifications for graduate-level studies.

College & Program List Building
••••••••••
If you’re unsure of the most suitable programs to apply to, we can help. We start by providing you with templates to organize the daunting amount of information to keep track of. We then show you how to proceed in three phases: the broad search, the comparative stage, and the deep dive exploration. This service includes four hours of coach support. Between sessions, your coach will help you assess your needs and will assign you “homework” to help you narrow your list.

Complete Application Review
••••••••••
If you have already produced your required documents and want a systematic and thorough review by experts in the field, we welcome you to submit all application documents to us (application, resume/CV, statement of purpose, additional essays). We will review your documents holistically, as the graduate (law, business, etc.) admissions committee will do. We will offer suggestions for revision and provide you with a written recommendation that evaluates your application as a whole and tells you how you can take it to the next level. This review will help you understand what admissions officers see when they review your file, and this will help you understand the revisions you need to make before the deadline.

CEG Interview Prep
Interview Preparation and Mock Interview Sessions
••••••••••
The best way to prepare for your interview is to rehearse, rehearse, rehearse . . . and then rehearse sounding unrehearsed. As part of your interview package with College Essay Guy, you’ll receive a pre-work packet including instructions on how to prepare in a short window of time. You’ll also receive a written guide addressing topics such as day-of tips, how to field surprise questions, wardrobe advice, and Zoom backgrounds. You will have the chance to complete a live mock interview designed to help you learn how to stand out during these conversations. Following the interview, you will receive a write-up summarizing key takeaways and suggestions for improvement. Variations: you can opt to add a second mock interview to the standard package ($1000) or you can request that we tailor your interview to a specific school ($1500).

Medical School Applications
••••••••••
Our team of med school specialists is comprised of coaches who are doctors themselves, as well as expert writing mentors. Most aspiring MDs want to help people, but so do most aspiring teachers, mental health professionals, public health professionals, physical therapists, and clergy. What makes this the right path for you? Med schools want more than just your spectacular brain. They are looking for mature candidates who have a strong sense of the values and insights they will bring to campus and the medical profession. They want folks who have given significant thought to their approach to patient care. Our coaches help you think these things through and present your accomplishments in a manner designed to stand out. Our one-on-one services, offered in 5-hour packages, include an application strategy session, recommended timelines, essay brainstorming exercises, guides full of “do & don’t” advice, and personalized consulting designed to help you complete the AMCAS application and essay in a manner that maximizes your candidacy.

CEG Essay Editing
Essay Editing
••••••••••
Some clients come to us with a pre-written draft. In this case, we offer a meticulous review – not a superficial editing – of your essay. That is because we are committed to the process of revision. Your chosen graduate program, no matter the area, will expect you to be open to multiple rounds of revision. Our essay review addresses the organization, clarity, quality of content, evidence of background and preparedness, and demonstration of fit with your chosen program, as well as the nitty gritty picky details of grammar. Have a draft that you like but it’s 800 words and the limit is 500? Not a problem. English is not your native language? No worries. We take whatever you have and help you improve it.

Career Advising
••••••••••
Grad School is a big commitment! Before you dive in, you might want to talk over your plans and goals to be sure you have identified the field and degree that will open the most professional doors for you. Sometimes it’s obvious . . . a lawyer needs to go to law school, a doctor needs to go to medical school. Other times, it’s not so clear. Not all future business leaders need an MBA, and not all teachers need a graduate degree in education. If you are interested in mental health, there’s a significant difference between an MA or PhD in Psychology, a PsyD, an MSW, MFT, Masters in Counseling, and M.Ed. in School Counseling. If you want to discuss your background and goals to make sure you’ve identified the best options, we love to mentor students before they commit to next-level studies.
CEG Career Advising
“With CEG, I achieved my dream of getting into some of the most prestigious business schools in the world, including HEC Paris, London School of Economics, Harvard, IESE, INSEAD, and Columbia. CEG’s dedication to helping me put together a standout application was exceptional. They helped me identify my strengths and craft a compelling narrative that showcased my achievements and potential, as well as answering my questions, offering feedback, and providing guidance whenever I needed it.”

“My coach’s attention to detail was phenomenal. She went above and beyond to research each program thoroughly, so we could tailor my application to each school's specific requirements and expectations. She helped me research the professors at each institution and even read their publications with me to discuss them together. This process helped me better understand each program's academic culture and intellectual climate, which proved invaluable in crafting my statement of purpose. I also appreciated her willingness to provide honest feedback. She was not afraid to tell me when something I wrote was cliché or underthought, and she encouraged me to dig deeper and think more critically about my claims.”

Frequently Asked Questions
  • When should I start thinking about graduate school?

The sooner, the better. It’s kind of like high school all over again. When looking back on their high school years, many seniors wish they had challenged themselves more in their class selection back in 9th grade, had the foresight to get involved in extracurricular activities early on, or had pursued meaningful summer projects sooner. If you are in college now, set yourself up for success by pursuing challenging classes, applying for summer jobs or internships, learning research skills, getting involved in clubs and organizations, contributing to your campus or local community, and cultivating close relationships with professors in your major.

  • What if I already finished college and didn’t do all that? Am I doomed?

Not at all. Work experience (particularly important for business school), community initiatives, independent research, and post-baccalaureate coursework can often fill in the gaps for people with less spectacular GPAs or college leadership experiences. You can also boost your skills and learn a new language, whether spoken or digital, through Coursera, or take an online class like this one Stanford offers in Statistics for AI, Machine Learning, and Data Science. Most programs will accept a professional letter of recommendation in lieu of one faculty recommendation for people who worked between undergraduate and graduate school.

  • But when should I actually start working on the applications?

We recommend one year before your deadlines to allow enough time for any necessary test preparation (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT); nine months before is a good time to research programs and formulate your list; start your essays six months before the deadline; and talk to your referees several months before you will need them to submit a letter on your behalf.

  • How important is the statement of purpose?

We cannot overstate its significance. The written elements of your application reveal who you are, how you think, what you care about, why you want this particular program, why now, where you’re going, what you hope to contribute, and how you understand your place in the world (or field, or profession).

  • What advice do you have as I begin the process?

We highly recommend developing a balanced list so that regardless of whether your first-choice program accepts you, you can still get on with your education.

  • How many programs should I apply to?

Unlike undergraduate applications, there’s no standard number to recommend. It entirely depends on what degree you are seeking. If you want help researching best-fit programs and building a balanced list, our specialists can help you determine what is right for you.

  • Do you write essays for students?

No. Beyond being unethical, that would be doing a great disservice to you. The essays submitted will showcase the original ideas and style of the student.

  • Where have your students been accepted?

We’re fortunate to work with lots of highly motivated and accomplished individuals who have gained admission to top law schools such as Harvard, Columbia, and Berkeley; b-schools including Wharton, Haas, INSEAD, IESE, London School of Economics, and Bocconi; and Engineering programs like Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Duke, and Yale. Our masters and PhD clients have been accepted at the likes of Stanford, Princeton, NYU, UMichigan, and USC. But we don’t believe that these highly selective institutions are the best fit for everyone. We don’t believe in the best programs: we believe in the best programs for you.

It's important to note that our services are advisory in nature and we can't (of course) guarantee admission (P.S. Don’t trust anyone who suggests they can). But we can pledge to help you assemble your best application to demonstrate your gifts, skills, knowledge, and values.

  • How will you match me with my graduate specialist?

After learning about your goals, we like to assign our consultants based on expertise in the field you are pursuing. Everyone on our team is amazing at what they do.

  • Where do sessions take place?

Online via Zoom, email, and Google Docs.

  • Do you offer degree counseling?

Yes. If you aren’t certain which graduate degree is right for you, we can offer an overview of your options and discuss which doors different degrees open.
